Position Available:

Executive Director, San Francisco Cinematheque

The San Francisco Cinematheque, one of the oldest and most respected presenters of experimental media in the country, is seeking an Executive Director. A successful candidate must possess a proven track record as a fund-raiser in the areas of foundation, corporate, and individual donors; strong leadership skills; and a passion for experimental media. The Executive Director must also bring exceptional financial, managerial, and marketing experience and a significant knowledge of current international and domestic experimental cinema practice and presentation. Because the creation and delivery of moving-image art is constantly evolving, the selected individual will have the opportunity to oversee a programming philosophy that builds on the legacy of The San Francisco Cinematheque while celebrating new visionary work. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is supported by two part-time staff (30 hours and 16 hours).

Responsibilities
  • Direct and manage the artistic and financial development of the organization, in pursuit of the mission of the San Francisco Cinematheque: to educate and develop audiences for experimental media.

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization; guide, mentor, and manage current part-time staff, interns, and volunteers to ensure audiences, artists, and educators experience a courteous and reliable environment.

  • Maintain long-established high programming standards by featuring imaginative guest curators and traveling programs and artists, by fostering collaborations with other arts institutions, and by presenting educational forums and exhibitions.

  • Create multiyear programming and event plans, in collaboration with the board and staff, and partnerships with local, national, and international organizations, government agencies, and arts organizations to ensure the vibrancy and visibility of the Cinematheque.

  • Direct all development efforts, including grant writing and reporting, membership drives, and donor development; foster earned income opportunities and audience development.

  • Publicly represent the organization at Cinematheque programs, at screenings of colleague organizations, at gatherings within the grantor community, at local policy forums, and at other Bay Area visual arts institutions.

  • Manage the financial operations of the organization, using “best practices” nonprofit fiscal procedures and standards. Prepare an annual budget for board approval, and supervise and monitor cash flow and monthly income and expense reports for Board review, in consort with administrative staff and an independent bookkeeper.

  • Coordinate and facilitate a rigorous marketing plan to promote the Cinematheque and its programming initiatives, research archive, Web site, and online and print publications.

Preferred Experience
  • Three years managerial experience in a nonprofit arts presenting institution; preference to those candidates specifically involved with experimental moving-image media.

  • Demonstrate a background in successful grant writing, individual donor development, and the creation and implementation of an annual strategic fund-raising plan.

  • Knowledge and appreciation of experimental media, from legendary forbears to current artists working to expand the boundaries of moving-image expression.

  • Excellent writing ability, proven public-speaking experience, and good interpersonal communication skills.

  • Familiarity with print, press, and online promotion, and the production of effective marketing materials for these outlets.

  • Experience and enthusiasm working with a small, dedicated staff and committed intern and volunteer pool.

  • Background in special-event production, including the successful integration of board members and energetic volunteers.

  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and financial experience geared to the capricious nature of current funding for the arts, and the business acumen to increase revenue from earned income and corporate sources.

  • The ability to think strategically to implement the Cinematheque’s priorities through a coherent plan of imaginative programmatic strands, audience development, and education.

  • A sense of humor and energetic passion for nonprofit work.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary and Benefits: $40,000 to $45,000 per annum, depending on experience; 35-hour workweek (flexible day/eve schedule); health and dental; three-week vacation.

The Organization

Founded in 1961, the San Francisco Cinematheque is widely recognized as a vital contributor to the growth of experimental cinema in the United States. From the early years of Bruce Baillie and Chick Strand to the present, it has offered a consistent venue for the West Coast premieres of the most influential and respected moving-image artists. Its publications have provided an indispensable forum for discussion, dissemination, and development of many of the most promising and fruitful new directions in cinematic expression. Today, the Cinematheque continues to strengthen this legacy by presenting the most exciting experimental media from the Bay Area, the nation, and the world and by serving as a lively forum for educators, students, and audiences.
