Since its foundation in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque has become one of the most knowledgeable and respected showcases of experimental film, digital media, and performative cinema in the world. Our intention is to make these works a part of the larger cultural landscape through three main areas of activity: exhibition, publication, and education.

We present 50 different programs every year, including:

• in-person presentations
• contemporary experiments in film, digital media and expanded cinema
• historical works from international and American cinema
• independent features and documentaries
• development of film and video presentations for other national and international showcases

To further the understanding of the disciplines of film and video art, we also offer:

• lectures and public forums
• retrospectives
• panel discussions
• archival services
• a publications library, and
• information services for visiting curators and critics.

Complementing our regular calendar of programs and publications, SF Cinematheque continues to produce special projects.  Recent examples include the 50 program retrospective of AMERICAN 8MM film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
