Canyon Cinema Night

California College of the Arts

Presented in Association with Canyon Cinema

A screening of recently acquired films from the overflowing shelves of Canyon Cinema, the country’s premier distributor of independent (REALLY independent) and experimental film. This tribute to Canyon Cinema features short experimental films including: two films in glorious 35 mm – Suzanne Pitt’s 24 minute animated narrative Joy Street, and Robert Schaller’s lush black & white triple image Triptych; a newly released portrait of an East Oakland recreation center by Canyon Cinema co-founder Bruce Baillie; films by local makers including X by Charlotte Pryce, Camera Roll at 100 Degrees by Jim Seibert, Tiny Rubber Band by Al Alvarez; Chronicles of a Lying Spirit by Cauleen Smith, Just Words by Louise Bourque and Time Flies by animator Robert Breer; and finally a recent piece by Stan Brakhage. Following the screening Canyon Director Dominic Angerame will be present to discuss the current state of experimental film distribution and Canyon’s new directions following its recent de-funding by the NEA and the subsequent partial funding of its new catalogue by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
