Ken Jacobs Nervous System performances are epic experiences of space/time manipulation, flickering examinations of inter-frame interstices, and exhilaratingly examples of three-dimensional cinema. Echoing Cinematheque’s 2016 Perpetual Motion series, we present the monumental Two Wrenching Departures, Jacobs’ 2006 digital video translation of his legendary 1989 live performance, composed as a memorial to two of Jacobs’ earliest collaborators and lifelong filmmaking influences—Bob (Blond Cobra) Fleischner and the original Flaming Creature himself, Jack Smith. Depicting slapstick street antics from the artist’s archive, Two Wrenching Departures memorializes the lives of these anarchic underground artists as they cavort and careen through 1957 New York.
