A fascinating combination of two artistic visions, Brownsnow is an expressionistic documentary on Michael Snow (Wavelength, La Region Centrale), one of the seminal figures of North American avant-garde film as well as internationally recognized sculptor, painter, photographer and musician. The film is a melding of Canadian filmmaker and photographer Carl Brown’s rich manipulation of the photographic image with the fundamental concepts of Michael Snow’s vision. Brown situates the key commentators on Snow’s artwork in various dramatic Canadian landscapes, and employs photographic chemistry to create textures and rhythms that vary across each scene and from frame to frame like an abstract expressionist painting in motion. Followed by Snow’s beautiful 18 minute See You Later/Au Revoir.
