AmbiValence and other films
David Gerstein in person
David Gerstein, in addition to being one of San Francisco’s finer filmmakers, is a serious arts activist who has done much to promote the avant-garde in the Bay Area. Everything he does reflects a strong belief that art, in how it influences our perceptions, is the primary mover for any meaningful social change.
“One of the things I’ve been trying to achieve in my last couple of films is a mode of usage that informs a political sensibility. I am not trying only to arouse thorough pictorial content (although some of the images may have that effect). I’m also aiming for a way of apprehending film in which the perception and interpretation of images operates on multiple levels.” — DG.
David Gerstein will show the following films:
AmbiValence (1982 5 min.) Continuity in Aggregates (1980 23 min.)
Tourist Movie (1979 3.5 min.) Moving Spaces (1975 8 min.)
Dark Sides (1981 5 min.) Burnt Offering (1976 8 min.)
