Cameraless Films
Many filmmakers have been drawn to completely dispensing with using the camera, scratching, coloring, cutting, growing molds, photogramming, and working in a myriad of ways directly on the film material instead. Tonight’s historical overview includes: Kaleidoscope, Color Flight, and Color Cry (Len Lye, 1935, 1938, 1952); Arnulf Rainer (Peter Kubelka, 1958-60); Mothlight (Stan Brakhage, 1963); Heterodyne (Hollis Frampton, 1967), Sonata for Pen, Brush, and Ruler (Barry Spinello, 1968); Ariel (Nathaniel Dorsky, 1983) and Go (Stephanie Maxwell, 1984). (63′, total).
