Abigail Child will be on hand to present the first Bay Area screening of her complete seven-part film, Is This What You Were Born For? Begun in 1981 with Prefaces, Child’s developing sound-image cycle has clearly emerged as one of the major independent film achievements of the 1980s, culminating in its last completed segment (Mercy, 1989) being highlighted in the New York Film Festival. “Child’s films are kinetic dramas of extraordinary craftsmanship and sensitivity…what results is an impressive musique concrete composition…” (New York Native) The cycle includes: Prefaces, Both, Mutiny, Covert Action, Perils, MAYHEM, and Mercy. The earlier Ornamentals (1979) will also be shown.
