Germany’s filmmaking duo Birgit and Wilhelm Hein have made their most challenging and incendiary film, the 75-minute Kali Film: I Spit On Your Grave (1988). Named for the Hindu Goddess of maternal tenderness and vengeful destruction, Kali is a found-footage compilation extracted from exploitation movies the Germans normally relegate to the Trivialfilme category (porn, splatter, prison movies) and fashioned into a study of female sexuality and violence as (mis)represented in popular culture. Also: Sinister Sex (1960, 70′) by Ed Wood, Jr., creator of Glen or Glenda?
