Dancer, photographer, voodoo priestess, filmmaker, Maya Deren emmigrated to the U.S. from Russia as a child. She became one of the first proponents of the American avant-garde in 1943 when she made Meshes… with her husband Alexander Hammid. Riddled with mythology, Freudian symbolism, and mysticism, Deren’s films signaled the birth of a new era in poetic filmmaking. This show will be San Francisco’s first comprehensive retrospective of her work in years.
Two screenings at 8pm and 10pm.
