RETHINKING ETHNOGRAPHY
Films by Trinh T. Minh-ha/Laleeen Jayamanne
Tonight’s program pairs films made in the 1980s which radically questioned and altered our perceptions of cultural identity. Trinh’s first film, Reassemblage (1982, 40 min.) is a complex visual study of the women of rural Senegal which also reflects on documentary filmmaking and the ethnographic representation of cultures. Jayamanne’s A Song of Ceylon (1985, 51 min.) is a formally rigorous and visually stunning study of colonialism, gender and the body. The film’s title evokes a name erased from the map of the world.
