A collection of sourcebooks compiled by experimental filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh during the production of some of her most notable films: Martina’s Playhouse (1989), The Deadman (1990), She Puppet (2001), Ape of Nature (2009), and OR119 (2022). Each of these films are significant milestones in Ahwesh’s career and have had remarkable influence on the landscape of experimental filmmaking. Contents include facsimiles of articles, letters, images, notations and drawings collected throughout the production process of each film, as well as a link to a playlist of unique audio recordings, selected by Ahwesh, related to each of the films.
Peggy Ahwesh (born 1954 Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) is a Brooklyn-based experimental filmmaker and video artist who has contributed to the media arts and arts education since the 1970s. A bricoleur who has created both narrative works and documentaries, some projects are scripted and others incorporate improvised performance. She makes use of sync sound, found footage, digital animation and Pixelvision video. Her work is primarily an investigation of cultural identity and the role of the subject in various genres. Her interests include genre; women, sexuality and feminism; reenactment; and artists’ books. Selected exhibitions include: Vision Machines, Spike Island, Bristol (2021) traveled to Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway (2022); the third body, BFI, London (2013); Heart_Land, JOAN, Los Angeles (2020) and Laugh My Darling, Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain (2009). Recent screenings: OR119 a musical about Wilhelm Reich, AFA/NYC; Art of the Motor, Yebisu Festival/Tokyo; Unsettled States, Baruch College/NYC. Ahwesh taught media studies at Bard College and al-Quds Bard College, Palestine. Ahwesh is represented by Microscope Gallery, New York.
