About the Project: A collaboration between San Francisco Cinematheque and INCITE Journal of Experimental Media (and co-edited by Cinematheque’s Steve Polta and INCITE‘s Brett Kashmere) Craig Baldwin: Avant to Live! is a publication in-progress documenting the work of acclaimed filmmaker and curator Craig Baldwin (b. Oakland CA, 1952), a Bay Area legend and an inspiring and influential figure in contemporary media arts worldwide. Meticulously detailed, with contributions from over 50 writers, artists, illustrators and ideologues, and approaching 500 pages(!) in length, Avant to Live! will be the first critical text to examine the artist’s films analytically as a coherent and meaningful body of work and critical artist’s statement while also examining the cultural impact of Baldwin’s Other Cinema curatorial project. Currently in production, Craig Baldwin: Avant to Live! will be available early 2021. Details of the project (including list or contributors) is available here.
