Thirty years after her untimely death at the age of 43, the importance and influence of Marjorie Keller through her films and her work as an institution builder for avant-garde cinema have become ever more apparent.

Her films, though criticized in the 1970s and 1980s, for being insufficiently feminist, have since given rise to an increasing number of dissertations, screenings, and reconsiderations of the politics of feminism in the cinema and beyond.

Included are contemporary critical essays about Keller’s 8mm and 16mm films, her organizational labor both in film and social activism and samples of her scholarly and creative writing. Together these texts bring long overdue attention to Marjorie Keller’s unique contributions to moving image art.

RELATED SCREENINGS: In conjunction with the publication of In the Absence of Marjorie Keller, two programs of her films, spanning twenty-four years, will be presented. Each one focuses on Keller’s interest in private life—perceiving daily events as occasions for inquiry and critique. Oct 21: Alternative Visions 7: Marjorie Keller Films @ BAMPFA + Nov 5: Marjorie Keller: Intimate Observer @ The Lab.
